UV technology has the potential to transform infection prevention, but too often its performance is assumed rather than proven. Our mission is to change that. By combining real-world validation with data-driven insights, we aim to establish a new standard for how UV disinfection is measured, understood, and trusted across healthcare.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

The Studies That Changed Everything

As UV disinfection technology became increasingly adopted across healthcare, one important question remained largely unanswered:

How do UV devices perform in real patient environments?

To help answer this question, Professor Valerie Edwards-Jones, one of the UK's leading experts in infection prevention and microbiology, was asked on multiple occasions to develop and oversee real-world evaluation programmes comparing UV disinfection technologies in healthcare environments.

What followed challenged many long-held assumptions within the industry.

While laboratory testing consistently demonstrated that different UV systems were capable of achieving impressive microbial reductions under controlled conditions, the real-world studies revealed something very different. Devices that appeared similar on paper often delivered dramatically different results when deployed in actual patient rooms.

Room geometry, shadowing, distance, furniture, equipment placement, surface orientation, and countless environmental variables all influenced how much UV light ultimately reached the surfaces that mattered most.

The findings highlighted a critical disconnect.

Laboratory testing could demonstrate what a device was capable of achieving.

Real-world validation revealed what it was actually achieving.

For the first time, healthcare providers were able to clearly see that successful UV disinfection was not simply about operating a device, it was about ensuring sufficient UV energy reached the target surfaces throughout the environment.

These studies helped open the eyes of hospitals, infection prevention teams, and UV operators alike.

More importantly, they exposed a significant gap within the industry. Devices could report that a cycle had completed successfully, yet there was often little independent evidence showing how much UV energy had actually reached the surfaces being disinfected.

It became clear that the industry needed more than operational reports.

It needed independent validation, meaningful comparison, and ongoing performance intelligence.

INSIGHTS was created to fill that gap.

Today, the same principles that emerged from those pioneering real-world studies are available to every UV operator through the INSIGHTS platform, helping healthcare facilities move beyond assumptions and gain a clearer understanding of how their UV disinfection programmes are truly performing.
